Bob Hope Stories

By admin on October 31st, 2008

by: Stephen Schochet

Once when he was a little boy in England, Leslie Hope (He later renamed himself Bob after a race car driver he idolized) wanted to pick an apple off a tree. Symbolic of his career, he didn’t want just any apple but the highest one possible. He lost his balance, fell and permanently changed the shape of his nose.
His big break in Hollywood was getting the part Jack Benny turned down in the Paramount film “The Big Broadcast Of 1938″. The director Mitchell Leisen could not stand the star of the film, the ornery WC Fields, who would run off the movie set and come back too soused to do the required scenes, flub his lines and scream for his lawyer. Liesen found Hope much more cooperative, although he was a nervous ham in front of the camera. Desperate to be a more traditional leading man like Fred Macmurray, Hope begged Paramount to pay for a nose job but they refused. It was in this film he got to sing “Thanks For The Memories” which along with his ski nose became Hope’s trademarks.
For his radio show when Hope found out that Jack Benny hired two writers for $1,000 a week, he in turn hired ten writers for $100 a week each and hated paying. At times he would gather the staff at the bottom of a stairwell and toss their paychecks down as paper airplanes. Other times Hope would interrupt his scribes intimacy with their wives by calling their houses very late at night to go over new material. For their part, the writers created the Hope movie character, egomaniacal, womanizing and cowardly, all but the last trait were true.
Hope’s relationship with Bing Crosby was love-hate. In one of their early road movies Paramount Studios filmed two endings in which each of the boys ended up with Dorothy Lamour, to see which result audiences preferred. They overwhelmingly chose Bing which annoyed Hope, who got his costar back by constantly reminding him that he wore a toupee. In one scene both had to lie on the same bed together (innocently, they were resting) and Bing refused to take his hat off. No amount of coaxing from Paramount executives could get Crosby to change his mind, he did not want to hear Bob’s toupee barbs. Hope later said the greatest acting performance he ever gave was smiling when Bing won his academy award for Going My Way (1944).
His frequent leading lady, Lucille Ball, was an even match for Hope in the ambition department. She lobbied the comedian to hire her little-known band leader husband Desi Arnaz for his radio show. She later regretted it when Desi slept with every showgirl who applied for a job, with rumors flying about Hope ending up with his second choices. Delores Hope was as long suffering as Lucy was. One time she was among a crowd waiting backstage for him after a live show. A reporter asked her,”Are you connected to Bob Hope in some way Miss?” “No, I’m just his wife.”
In the late 30s, Hope made fun of veterans on his radio show. Performing at army bases was a way to bring up ratings. Then came World War II with Hope and a number of other stars recruited by the government for a war bond selling, victory caravan tour. Unlike many of the pampered celebrities who complained about the cramped quarters on their shared train, the ex-vaudevillian Hope was exhilarated by the travel. It was no problem for him to go overseas to entertain the troops.
At first Hope found America’s homesick young fighting men to be the easiest audience he ever faced. Jokes that would die in the states would get uproarious laughter from the troops. In the beginning Hope stayed out of combat areas, but then he reasoned that those in actual battles needed him the most. Hope became addicted to the to the danger of flying in planes that might get shot down or performing in places that had recently been attacked. But he was greatly moved by the injuries he saw in hospital wards, and quietly help set up several of the soldiers he met in their own businesses after the war ended. Later he could not understand the Vietnam situation, getting in trouble when he repeatedly suggested we should bomb the enemy into submission. Hope’s love for the troops stayed constant, even in Nam when they booed him.
Hope got along great with all the Presidents he met, whether he agreed with them or not. He once said that Roosevelt laughed so hard at his jokes he almost voted democratic. He loved telling the story about a marine in World War II who was disappointed that he had not killed a Japanese soldier. At the edge of a jungle he tried to smoke them out, by shouting,” To hell with Hirohito!” It worked, a Japanese soldier came out and shouted,” To hell with Roosevelt!” But the marine lowered his weapon,” Darn it, I can’t shoot a fellow Republican.”

Albinyana (Costa Dorada)

By admin on October 31st, 2008

by: Armando Zanolla

The municipality of Albinyana belongs to the district of Baix Penedes of the province of Tarragona. It covers a territorial extension of 19, 4 Km2. The town is 198 meters above sea level and is located in the northern part of la Serra Del Quadrella. The suburbs of ?Les Peces?, ?les Masies Del Torrent? and ?Tomav?? also belong to Albinyana.
ALBINYANA, POPULATION
According to the last census carried out by the National Institute of Statistics, in 2001 there were 1.630 inhabitants.
ALBINYANA, HISTORY
There is evidence of prehistory in the town, such as the cave paintings found by archaeologists in ?La cueva de Vallmajor?, ?Sierra del Quadrell?. Also there are ruins from the roman era. The name Albinyana appeared for the first time in the year 1010, in the will of Adalbert, who left the castle to the monastery of ?Sant Cugat Del Vall?s?. According to the Cartulary of Sant Cugat, Albinyana was founded in the year 1040, when Abbot Guitart gave the ‘Carta de Poblaci?’ (a population permit) to Bernat d?Oleguer, on condition that he would build a castle and populate the place. Abbot Guitart kept half the tax privileges and the right to designate the priest for the Castle?s church. From the ?Reconquista? to the year 1835 the town was under the ruling of the ?Abades? from the ?Monastery of Sant Cugat del Valles?. The religious monument of the town is the ?Parroquial Church of San Bartolome?, built in the XVIII century. On the Sierra del Quadrell there is the Chapel of San Antoni!
o where from one can stare at the magnificent views it has. From the Arab era there are only the ruins of a castle.
ALBYNIANA, GASTRONOMY
In this district the traditional asking menu is: ?Xato? for starters, ?Ajo quemado?, ?pescado azul? for main course, and ?bufats? for dessert.
ALBINYANA, ECONOMY
As Albinyana is further inland, tourism in not the main power of income, so this leaves the agriculture in top ranking. The chief crops are the vineyards, cereals, hazelnuts, almonds and olive trees, although, nowadays, only around 30% of the territory is cultivated. The traditional industry in town was the making of baskets with ?palmito? leaves, which lasted until half the 20th century, and also the back skins of animals, supplying the tanning industries in Igualada. Nowadays there is a flower plantation and a small textile factory, both located in suburb of Los Peces. In 1972, an animal reservation was created, which has been lately completed introducing animal species and with the opening of the water park ‘Aquale?n’, which nowadays brings more than a few tourists to the area.
ALBINYANA, FIESTAS AND TRADITIONS
On the 16th of July there is the festivity of ?Mare de Deu del Carmen? and on the 24th of August ?San Bartolome?. On Easter Monday there is a meeting at the shrine of Sant Antoni, with the saying of a mass, the eating of the ‘Mona’, a traditional Catalan pastry, games for the children and the famous Sardanes dancing of Catalonia.
ALBINYANA, PLACES TO VISIT
1. The Vall Major cave and its rupestrian paintings.
2. The Parish Church of Sant Bartomeu, from the 18th century.
3. The shrine of Sant Antoni de Padua, situated on top of la Serra del Quadrell.
4. According to Ruy Fern?ndez, the castle of Albinyana was built by the Arabs as a watchtower, but nowadays only the foundations and the base of the round tower remain. It is also interesting to visit the building called ‘Cal Gener’ and its wonderful graffitto, in the suburb of Les Peces.

A Wedding in the Bahamas

By admin on October 30th, 2008

by: Ester Napoli

Do you envision your wedding in a tropical paradise? Perhaps you see yourself exchanging vows on the warm sand beside an aquamarine sea or sailing off into the sunset with ten of your dearest friends to enjoy a wedding feast and the spectacular scenery. If such a scenario appeals to you, a Bahamas wedding can make your dream come true.

In order to be eligible for a legal Bahamas wedding, you and your partner must spend one day in the Bahamas before submitting an application for a marriage license ($100). You must provide a photo ID. If you are widowed, you are required to provide the death certificate of your spouse; if you are divorced, you must provide a document proving that you are legally divorced. You will also need to have proof of your arrival date in the Bahamas (your Bahamas Embarkation Card will do). It is recommended that you obtain a copy of your wedding certificate before you leave the Bahamas. It can be mailed to you if time is an issue but delays and complications have been frequently encountered. Once you arrive home, you will need this marriage certificate in order to obtain other legal documents.

Wedding packages are offered at most hotels and resorts in the Bahamas. Prices vary. Here are a few examples:

  • The Bluff House Beach Hotel located in Green Turtle Bay, Abaco, Bahamas, offers a wedding package that includes: a wedding coordinator, a wedding cake, a minister or administrator to perform the ceremony, a photographer, the bride?s bouquet and a bottle of champagne. They will also be happy to arrange for a live band and a buffet.
  • Small Hope Bay Lodge located in Andros Island, Bahamas, is a smaller resort consisting of 20 cottages, one of which is a honeymoon cottage. It offers a simple wedding package for $500 which includes all the necessary paper work, a cake and champagne, a video and photos. At this resort you can get married on the beach or even underwater!
  • Bahamas Wedding Paradise is an organization that offers several wedding packages. You can select one of their packages or design your own. Packages range in price from $360 to over $3000 (please note that Bahamas Wedding Paradise is not a hotel or a resort).

Make the wedding of your dreams a reality and start your married life in the tropical paradise of the Bahamas.

Disney Land and Disney World

By admin on October 30th, 2008

by: Sandy Baker

The big dream of most young children is to go to Disney Land or Disney World. This vacation, though, can cost you an arm and a leg! How do you keep it affordable and please the kids? There are several things you can do to limit your costs and enjoy a great Disney vacation.
First, know your budget. Know what is the most you can spend. Many people often rack up large debts from a trip to Disney and that is just not wise. So, knowing what you can and can?t afford is the most important factor.
Then, you can start considering the large expenses for your Disney vacation. Begin with how you will get there as that is one of the most expensive parts of your Disney Land or Disney World vacation. Flying is most likely the means of transportation that you will have to utilize. But, is it more cost effective to drive? Even if it does take eight or more hours, it may be a great way of cutting costs. Also, flying at odd times of the day and week can help to lower this cost.
So, you?re there, now what? Accommodations are often the next major cost in a Disney Vacation. Cut down on this by not staying at the location itself, but maybe a few miles out. Another way is to book your Disney Land or Disney World vacation at off peak times not during peak parts of the year for visitors. For example, traveling in the summer or during spring break is often the most crowded allowing hotels to charge more since lodging is harder to fine. Cutting down on meals is next. Perhaps you can cut down on breakfast by bringing cold cereal and milk to your hotel room?
Or, pack a sack lunch for while you visit the Disney resort. Cut down on the amount of drinks you buy by purchasing a water bottle and then refilling it at the water fountains. There are many such things you can do to cut your expenses. You can do the same thing with snacks.
Okay, so planning your Disney Land or Disney World vacation may seem like a bigger hassle, but it really is worth the extra effort. Cutting a few dollars here and there will put more money in your pocket for extra attractions or that special toy to remember the trip. Try utilizing websites like http://www.e-travelpromos.com to help you plan the trip to Disney World and Disney Land.

LAX Parking

By admin on October 29th, 2008

by: Greg Bessoni

Whether flying toward stardom or the beach, LAX visitors will all need a parking space. With eight colossal terminals, LAX is the world?s fifth busiest passenger airport. Parking considerations are critical with such an enormous facility and so many travelers. Fortunately, LAX meets the challenge.
http://www.airportparkingreservations.com/airports/losangeles/index.shtml?refID=673&subid=LAX
LAX access is gained by the main Interstates like the I-5, I-10, I-405, I-110, or I-105, as well as Routes 1, 2, 60 to the east and Route 90 to the north.
Short-term LAX Airport parking options include metered spaces, while long-term parking focuses on surface lots. If the Central Terminal parking area has no empty spaces, there is a metered LAX Airport parking area close by.
http://www.airportparkingreservations.com/airports/losangeles/index.shtml?refID=673&subid=LAX
Short-term parking rates fluctuate at LAX, but expect a price range of $4 (or more) per hour with a daily maximum rate of $30 or more for 24 hours. Welcome to California!
Not to worry?discount LAX Airport parking exists in Lots B and C. Signage directing the driver to these lots is posted along the entrance to the LAX area. In these discounted lots, prices start at $1 per hour; the first two hours are free for LAX airport parking.
http://www.airportparkingreservations.com/airports/losangeles/index.shtml?refID=673&subid=LAX
For the tardy traveler, expedited LAX airport parking services include valet parking; service attendants take care of the parking and paperwork?you simply run to the terminal.
Rental car pick-ups and returns are handled at on-airport parking areas. Signage along the LAX entry road clearly indicates directions to these lots.
http://www.airportparkingreservations.com/airports/losangeles/index.shtml?refID=673&subid=LAX
And if none of these options seem viable, there are privately operated off-airport parking options that defy the few parking spaces amidst the outlying LAX neighborhoods. These lots offer competitive rates, convenience, locations and safety. They also offer a similar handicapped-enabled, 24-hour free shuttle bus services to and from the main terminals of LAX.
Every garage and surface lot has disabled parking facilities. This includes wider parking spaces and handicap-equipped, free shuttle buses featuring hydraulic lifts for convenient bus entry.
http://www.airportparkingreservations.com/airports/losangeles/index.shtml?refID=673&subid=LAX
Cash, major credit cards, valid airport parking coupons (LAX recognized underwriters issue these?hotels, for example, may cover LAX airport parking costs) may be used as payment for LAX Airport parking fees.
LAX Airport parking services include heavy security monitoring on a 24-hour basis, preventing thefts, fires, or terrorism inside the grounds. For additional questions or requirements, call the LAX Airport parking information line at 310-646-8021.
